The theme of this mural is rooted in the Hawaiian The theme of this mural is rooted in the Hawaiian proverb ‘Ōlelo No‘eau, “O ka pono ke hana ʻia a iho mai na lani,” meaning “Continue to do good until the heavens come down to you.” This guiding thought has shaped my process, and it represents the idea of staying grounded in goodness and purpose—just as my grandma taught me. This mural is not just a reflection of my journey, but also a tribute to their enduring wisdom. One of the central symbols in this piece is the koaʻe kea, or white-tailed tropicbird. Known for its long, graceful tail feathers, the koaʻe kea is a powerful symbol in Hawaiian culture. It represents love, loyalty, and eternal bonds. But what I also find so striking is how the birds follow one another—so fluid, so instinctual. This, to me, symbolizes following the footsteps of our elders, just as these birds follow the lead of one another. It’s a reminder to us all that we, too, must follow the guidance of our elders, learning from their wisdom and striving to become better versions of ourselves as we walk through life. As many of you know, this park is where I spent so much of my childhood—running around, playing soccer with my friends, feeling deeply connected to this place. To return here, full circle, and now be able to give something back through this mural is both humbling and surreal. Art is a way to spark conversation, to create reflection, and hopefully inspire change. Through this mural, my hope is that you not only see the colors and images, but also feel the stories and emotions woven into it—stories of love, connection, and the importance of continuing to grow in the footsteps of those who came before us. I’d like to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to Maui Public Art, National Fitness Court and HMSA for their incredible support in bringing this mural to life. Without their belief in this project, none of this would have been possible. This mural is for you, the community. I hope that when you see it, you feel a connection to the stories and themes within it—just as the koaʻe kea guides us to follow, learn, and grow. Thank you again for being here and supporting this journey.

Also side note, when I was first making this piece it wasn’t intended for anything. I actually made this with no pressure of a project deadline and taking the time to process what I wanted to illustrate. I took sooooo many steps back from this piece and came back when the time is right. I want to let you all know that’s it’s okay to do that! That is the beautiful process of making art and creating personal growth as an artist😊 As time went on, I was fortunate enough to have @mauipublicart (thank you so much!💗) reached out to me to create a piece for Lahaina and I knew this was the perfect fit.
